review 1: Lupica is very good at immersing his reader in the game, yet building a story captivating enough to keep everyone involved. For anyone who has ever played on a losing team (yes!) or watched a family member struggle through a losing season (yes!)they will relate to the feelings Jake is experiencing. Can he use this situation to grow as a player and as a compassionate human being (yes!) I loved that Jake's mom is the former jock in the family having played college soccer and that one of the characters' favorite hang outs is the library on a Sunday afternoon. To have reading celebrated by two male athletes is awesome. Thanks, Mike!
review 2: I read this book for 3rd quarter independent reading. Shoot out was another great book by Mike Lupica. This book is about a ... more12 year old boy named Jake who's family moved to a new town. Not only does Jake have to change schools, but he also has to play on a new soccer team. His new soccer team is a last place team while his old team was a first place team. Jake has a difficult time adjusting to all these new life changes. If it wasn't for his new soccer friend Kevin, Jake would probably have quit soccer. Jake learns a lot more about life lessons during this very difficult time. For example, Jake has to learn about sportsmanship on a losing team and also how to try and teach his new teammates to be better players. By the end of the book his new team finally starts to play as a team and they start winning and eventually beat his old team. If you like great comeback sports stories you will like this book.This book has 157 pages less
