B.P.R.D.
review 1: For me, this is the weakest volume of the B.P.R.D. series thus far. As many of the other reviews have said, the strength of the series comes from it's collection of characters that you care about. Unfortunately, they are left by the wayside to tell this tale of Professor Bruttenholm, whom reluctantly leaves the fledgling Hellboy to investigate weird goings on in post-WII Berlin. There he is assigned a group of rag-tag soldiers who serve as a effort to give us characters to care about (for me, it didn't work), and he encounters his opposite number on the Russian side, a mysterious little girl (whom is the probably the best part of the volume).I can understand while this series was made. Professor Bruttenholm is more or less an unexplored character with deep roots in bot... moreh Hellboy-verse series. While I would like to see his history, it just didn't do much for me in this case. Still more or less enjoyed this one, but B.P.R.D. has so consistently blown my socks off that when a less-than-stellar volume comes down the line, it just sticks out.
review 2: Well, this was another really good BPRD volume, taking a bit of a break after the big events of the previous volume for a trip into the past as Professor Bruttenholm investigates crazy Nazi plots in post-WWII Berlin, gets involved with a creepy Russian girl with a horrifying secret, and uncovers a world-ending scheme having to do with vampires. It's pretty awesome, with some great art by Paul Azaceta, and I think it kicked off a sort of sub-series within the BPRD/Hellboy universe that follows these events. It's cool to watch Mignola and company expand things and tell more and more types of stories in this (these) series, so I'm down for more. less

This is one of the darkest comic books I've encountered. Good for a change of pace.

An engaging and disturbing romp through the early years of the Hellboy-verse.
