review 1: Awesome apocalyptic horror. The team is starting to fragment even as they face two new threats, one who seems to be an evil ally and another that may spell the doom of the human race. An old friend is recently turned and now missing, and a longtime squad member is starting to flake. Mignola, Acurdi and Davis do a great job nailing the characterization and the stakes. The devastation of what the BPRD is facing is captured in imagery that recalls the bombed-out aftermath of World War II, and the "monsters" are inhuman and unnerving. One could wonder why now is the time for this apocalyptic plan to finally go into action, but other than that I'm amazed at what the BPRD team is facing: perhaps the end of the world.
review 2: With the Plague of Frogs storyline comple
... morete (as much as any of these stories can be complete) we now get the beginning of the Scorched Earth series. I love the Liz-centric stories, and was glad to see the problem of her mystery advisor/mindworm/creepy stalker being taken up in this new series. His warnings, the visions he gives Liz of an apocalyptic future in which humanity is destroyed, haven't changed, but his approach has become more direct. I hate that he's so incredibly powerful and can easily evade the rest of the team, but the ambiguity of his nature--is he good or evil?--appeals to me. Also, Kate and Bruno! They're so cute. Kate's the most normal of the team and I like seeing a little romance going her way. less

Kinda wish I didn't skip ahead like I did, but it was a real good read. I love Guy Davis art.
