review 1: And thus I'm all caught up with Hellboy, at least for the time being. Pretty awesome stuff in this volume, as the story that had been building for the last few volumes comes to a head, with Hellboy facing the evil queen/goddess Nimue as she gradually transforms into a dragon as the huge Ogdru Jahad monsters make an incursion into our world. Armies rise, huge battles are fought, devastation is wreaked across the land, and Hellboy ends up dying (for now) in the battle to end all battles. There's plenty of cool uses of mythology, incorporating stories that resonate through the ages, and some nice character work as Hellboy rejects not only his prophesied destiny as the leader of Hell's army, but also his recently-revealed lineage as the true king of England and heir of King Ar... morethur, deciding to finish things in his own way. And of course, more amazing artwork from Duncan Fegredo, with awesome creatures, huge armies, lightning crashing down and destroying the British landscape, and an incredibly bombastic smackdown of a fight between Hellboy and a dragon. Awesome stuff. I can't wait to read Hellboy in Hell, but I've got plenty more volumes of BPRD to tide me over in the meantime.
review 2: I'm usually not a fan of fantasy that tries to combine lots of different myths from different regions, because it doesn't really work well. It usually feels like a mish-mash. Not here. Mignola is an insanely talented writer, and this volume pays off the promise of the previous volumes. The Hellboy cycle is not only worth reading, it's worth re-reading. Heck, it's even worth researching before another read. Theosophy, Hollow Earth myths, Hyperborea, the Arthurian legends, Lemuria, the Cthulhu mythos, Russian folklore... Look up anything from a Hellboy volume, and you'll find yourself clicking links and reading for the rest of the evening. And the research pays off: Mignola knows his stuff. less
