review 1: *2nd Reading*I really love Hellboy, but these last several TPB have made it harder to love. After the Conqueror Worm Storyline or so these one-shot collections become demonstrably better than the longer form ones (because Hellboy is always at his best when fighting Nazis). As such the one-shots in this collection are really enjoyable. My only complaint is that one of the things I love about Hellboy is Mike Mignola's distinct artwork, and its been a long time since we've seen that, and here we only get a crappy 8-pager that Mignola did for USA Today. That and I'm tired of seeing these comics drawn by Richard Corbin. I love Corbin and Heavy Metal as much as the next guy, but the whole point of having guest artwork is to add some variety; this volume has THREE stories illustr... moreated by Richard Corbin (Hellboy in Mexico, Double Feature of Evil, and The Bride of Hell) and only two by other artists. Added to the Corbin-illustrated The Crooked Man in Crooked Man and Others (granted one of my favorite Hellboy shorts to date) and the weird Hellboy in Africa story in the Troll Witch and others, that makes 5 Hellboy stories that Corbin has "guest" illustrated. That said, I do like all of this volume's Corbin stories, so I guess I can't complain too much.
review 2: I was expecting a little bit more in the way of plot advancement for this one, but it was another collection of random shorts. Not to say that these were not fabulous random pieces, because they were all awesome. It was especially nice to see a segment that Mignola drew, because I've missed his art. I also really liked Scott Hampton's art for "The Sleeping and the Dead". Really lovely work. less
