review 1: Not nearly as satisfying for me as a complete arc written and drawn by Mignola, but that appears to be a thing of the past. I find I still enjoy the Hellboy character and world as written by Mike Mignola, while Richard Corben and Duncan Fegredo both bring a strong and distinctive atmosphere to the book which has grown on me through their various contributions. Also, Jason Shawn Alexander's work is totally gorgeous and far more successfully captured the Hellboy universe in my opinion than his previous work with Mignola on an Abe Sapien story. This was a collection of single issues or double issue story arcs. Fun in that pulp/sci-fi short story collection kind of way, but I walked away from it feeling like I'd taken just a bite of 4 delicious meals and still felt hungry for ... moresome substance. Guess that's just the nature of it!
review 2: *2nd reading*"The Crooked Man" is my favorite Hellboy story. Period. I know I've said that I think Richard Corbin is overused in the series, but damned if he doesn't know his stuff. The use of Appalachian folklore is awesome and rare, and the story of Tom's redemption is brilliant."They That Go Down to the Sea in Ships," in addition to having an awesome title, has great artwork, and seriously, who doesn't love a Blackbeard story. "In the Chapel of Moloch" has a great Lovecraftian feel to it, and is the first time we've seen Mignola artwork in like three books. "The Mole" is just fun.A great collection. As I've pointed out before, I love these Hellboy side adventure collections more than the actual main story. less

Loved that he went to Appalachia. And still got a Mignola drawn story in too.

I hated the art in the Crooked Man. It's too bad, because the story was fine.

Fun stories and nice art. I liked the tribute to Goya in one of the stories.
