review 1: I liked this book even though I didn't entirely buy that the narrator would have known the details she did about her grandmother, but perhaps that is the point. The narrator is not just a narrator but a writer (who has the gift of invention and filling in the gaps) who is connected to her grandmother as the "first writer" of the family. Sometimes the voice of the narrator moved between that of an adult to that of a child without warning, and I am not certain that that was purposeful. I will be interested to read something else by Agus, as this feels like a confessional first novel and I am wondering what is next now that the novel of love, family and being a writer has been written. All in all compelling and tender.
review 2: A beautiful and tragic story about
... more the life of a complicated woman as told by her anonymous granddaughter. It is a non-traditional love story (you'll see what I mean when you read it!). I once took a class on Sardinian woman authors and there was a common thread of despair and roughness and passion that felt unique to the woman of this island. This novel follows in the same tradition. It is short but complex and I would strongly recommend it. less

As Caroline said, saved at the end by a surprising twist. Lovely evocative language and atmosphere.

Nice read from a writer I was unfamiliar with, capped with a surprise ending.

Really more like 3.5 stars. In case you're keeping track.
