review 1: This is #6 in the Jack Cafferty detective series. Set in a high security mental ward, something is terrifying the patients. Reports of the "Maude" sitting on patients' chests and tormenting them has staff on edge. Quick chapters, suspenseful plot kept my attention, but the plot wrapped up a little too simply and some story lines didn't resolve themselves. Good for Hayder fans and a quick read.
review 2: It's an odd little tale and starts off quite well. Is it a mystery? Murder? Supernatural occurrence? What is happening? It was a bit drawn out to find out what was going on and I became tired. Meanwhile there's another old back story of Jack Caffery that continued and sadly, I'm tired of that as well. Could be me. I have a hard time envisioning the back stor
... morey. Oh, not in how the event occurred but what happened subsequently. Where is the body hidden? I get to that part where the body is being visited to ensure it hasn't been disturbed and just shake my head and skim through. Then I wonder why do all Jack Caffery books (that I've read) contain this back story. To entice the reader to see the struggle between two characters? Because there's a love interest between the characters so we get to witness what extent lovers will go to to protect each other? Lie? I don't know. I'm not feeling it any more and am glad that at least now it seems a resolution has occurred. No dear reader….we are given the information but not the actual resolution so I'm sure in the next book (which has probably already been written) it will center around the resolution. Look, Mo Hayder is a fantastic writer; the stories are interesting…this one just went a little longer in the tooth than others but it's only my opinion and that's what you get with me - an opinion - not a rehash of the actual story. For that you have to read the book. Come on now, Mo Hayder is worth it. Truly. I may have gotten a bit tired while reading this book, but Ms. Hayder does know how to spin a tale. less
