review 1: First in a series about a coroner who is based in Bristol and lives near Tintern, an area I know a bit so I enjoyed the background to this. Jenny Cooper has just been appointed to her post after some traumatic events in her personal life, and she is beginning a difficult task for which she seems not to be ready. I found her constantly popping Temazepam and driving recklessly to be very alarming (perhaps because the locality is not far away and the idea of encountering her on the road is pretty disturbing. OK, I do know it's fiction). Everything about her new job is also disturbing, from the strange isolation of her office to the circumstances surrounding her predecessor's death. She soon comes up against some powerful enemies, and it is surprising that she manages to pull ... moreoff several clever manoeuvres in the course of her investigation. I am not sure about introducing a hitherto unknown character right at the end, but apart from that this book sets the scene for a potentially interesting series, a bit different from other thrillers, and look forward to reading more. There's an undercurrent of social comment and other values which I like.

I found it hard to put this book down.. I don't think her anxiety helped my anxiety though. :)

Less than meh. Glad I didn't purchase any more books in this series.
