review 1: U can say the author did a lot of hard work on amalgamating a work like this..specially on a heated turf as Afghanistan and Afghanistan's tales..But what it seemed to me was a messy mixture of all facts, myths, rumors and news in one small book which is incapable of holding it all... Aslam has proven to get most history and facts wrong and I almost had to strap myself to the book to not leave it.In literary terms yes the book was elite. But this is not one of those books that keep you hooked and definitely not one you should read if you're light hearted. Briefly, I would call this a very novel way of self expression, since obviously it was a work of fiction. No matter how convincing the scenarios seem, it's not real. No, this is not happening on that side of the world. No... more. This is not how all people there are.... Also throughout the book the author makes no attempt to emphasize any emotion... It's just bare fact.. This happened..make up your own emotion before the next totally unrelated sentence.I remember feeling imprisoned by my curiosity to go to the end of the book, which wasn't unpredictable, like I said it just happened.
review 2: Wasted Vigil is tough read but it is also beautifully written. Here in Canada, it is almost impossible to imagine everyday life in a war torn country like Afghanistan, but Nadeem Aslam gives us a bitter taste of it. We experience the country through the eyes of a Soviet woman, two Americans with differing moral codes, a fourteen-year-old jihadist who has been forced to become a suicide bomber by the Taliban, and a British doctor and his Afghanistan wife and daughter. The title of the book is apt and sets the tone of this bleak, but shockingly realistic book. I admire Aslam's courage to write a story with such unflinching honesty. Wasted Vigil will almost certainly upset you as a reader, but at the same time, this story will deepen your understanding of a political situation so volatile that violence seems inevitable. less

Some beautiful prose, a little scattered, a little "preachy".
