review 1: At first I thought I wouldn't like this book but then when I was a 1/4 way through I couldn't put it down. I finished it in a day and was glad that I stuck with it. Haji is a genius with characters and I loved how the book was written from all different points of view. I am not a religious person but I found that the religion was just a background and not the dominant theme that overshadowed the story. Loved it!!
review 2: Even though there were many moments in the book where emotion was strongly portrayed,I had difficulty connecting to the main character.I expected her to erase the lines between religion but it seems as if she did not fully accept her father or grandmother.Deena is such a warm character and yet Jo's relationship with her remained lukewarm till
... more the end of the book. Maybe I expected a bit more and instead it felt as if Jo used Sadiq and Deena to reinforce her Christianity. less

I love this book and the way it lets life be complex and messy, the way life really is.
