review 1: Have been meaning to read this for a while now and am so glad I did finally. "Almighty", as the matriarch of one of Baltimore's finest families is called, announces on Christmas Day that she will disinherit the entire family because someone has offended her deeply... unless the guilty one confesses by New Year's Day. The book is divided into three parts, one for each Sullivan granddaughter and her "confession". A well-written, funny, and yet touching YA book.
review 2: During the Christmas festivities for the wealthy Sullivan family, the family matriarch--known as "Almighty Lou" to everyone in Baltimore--gathers her family close and delivers some surprising news. She has a brain tumor and may not live for much longer and has decided to change her will. She won'
... moret leave her inheritance to anyone in the family unless someone confesses to having wronged her. It's interesting that everyone immediately assumes it's one of the three girls who has done so instead of the three boys. Nevertheless, by turns, first Norrie, then Jane, and then Sassy offer up their true confessions--in writing, no less--and beg for their grandmother's indulgence and forgiveness. Although some of the passages about the cotillion and the enormous amounts of money being discussed here will put off many readers, I liked how all three girls rebelled in their own ways. While Almighty's proclivity to control those around her with her money and the way others bow to her will because of her wealth and influence are rather sickening, readers will see a glimpse of her heart near the end of the book. Whether that small peek redeems her will up to them to decide. Still, I certainly enjoyed meeting these characters. less
