review 1: A good series of spy stories, but I would have preferred less connectivity between the issues. I never would have expected to hear that from myself, but I guess I was hoping for shorter, more substantive plots. The longer storyline didn't catch my interest as much as the characterization of Natasha, which is quite good. The art is rich and delightful, perfect for sharp intensity and the fog of war. In short, the art is perfect for the character and the storyline. If you want a story with less super powers and more intensity this could be a good choice. Don't expect panel to panel supervillains, aliens and superheroes, the offerings here are more subtle but no less rich than a typical Marvel epic.
review 2: Great book filled with top notch writing and absolutely
... more gorgeous artwork. However, it does highlight a problem I've had with a lot of modern comics, books, movies, etc, and that is we get lots of characters telling us what a great spy Natasha is (including herself), but there is no evidence of that in the book itself. She screws up constantly, fails almost every single mission she takes, and gets outwitted on more than one occasion. It's similar to Scott Snyder's recent run on Batman, in which many characters talk about how great Batman is, only to have him get conked on the head on the very next page. I understand that conflict creates drama and all that, but when a character's are visibly and narratively inferior to those ascribed to them by other characters, it's kinda hard to take them seriously. Other than that rather big quibble, though, this is a fun, globetrotting adventure that leaves the reader wanting more. less
