review 1: OMG this book is crazy! But I just had to read it since it's about Tesla...and I'm like, his number one geek! :)I really didn't know what to expect, since some people were saying that the book was kinda middle school sounding, but I was pleasantly surprised. It does seem to be written with a younger audience in mind, but it has so much adult level humor in it that I think a younger reader would miss a lot.The writing is interesting in that it kinda snaps between being light and funny, and then suddenly more serious. It's really funny, though some of the humor is a bit morbid, but you find yourself laughing anyway. Is that a good thing? :)I wish it was longer, but it's still a fun read.Basically, Nick discovers a bunch of really far out inventions by Tesla in the attic of h... moreis great aunt's old home, sells them at a garage sale as junk, then finds out what they really are, and that a secret organization wants them. Now he has to collect them together again while avoiding being killed by the organization, who also want the devices. It's got free energy and twisted humor, what else do you want?!
review 2: While I do think this middle grade sci-fi/fantasy will work for some, for me it suffered from some problems with its tone. It was frequently light and humorous (occasionally even crossing the line into flat-out silly), yet there were some serious things going on with the plot and characters. In a book where the world is about to end and a character actually dies, the humor seemed out of place. Less humor and a little more tension and suspense would have made this a bit more enjoyable.Seemed like a cross between Twilight Zone and Goosebumps. Interesting, but not for older teens who are looking for truly scary or truly suspenseful. less
