review 1: I found it a bit slow. I felt like nothing much happened. It was interviews with people, extracting information but no real action. I kept putting it down. I felt it only became a page turner at the end when the twists and turns unravelled. I came away feeling like the wind had been taken out of my sails: jaded and tired. I am really a big fan of happy endings. Not sure I will read the others but it was cleverly crafted, although I didn't feel there was a great deal of character definition. It felt like a film if anything.
review 2: In general, I didn't feel as though I couldn't put it down or that I was particularly invested in the characters. Steinhauer writes much of this with a huge amount of foreshadowing - asking you to figure out big chunks of the plot
... morefar in advance. I'm not usually so savvy with mystery novels, so I have to assume this is intentional, although I can't figure out what this mechanism adds to the experience. less

Interesting book. I think comparisons to Le Carre are premature.
