review 1: This book is simply incredible. I loved every minute reading it, for I could feel the tension and excitement unfolding throughout the entire book. I could not put it down; it kept me mesmerized. All of these characters that Card had so exquisitely written, you get emotional attached to them so easily. Drawing you in from the start, he designs characters whom you can relate with and puts them through realistic scenarios that you make think. Situations that make you wonder, if you would do the same thing. Along with that, Card creates characters that inspire admiration and respect for their selflessness, courage, and intelligence. For instance, Mazer Rackham is one of those whom it is impossible not to respect for his outstanding selflessness. Countless of times in the book,... more he's risked his life to save others and various of moments has he given up his reputation in order to protect the people of earth. Even to the people in China, when the aliens attacked, who were rude, awful, and insulting to him, he still tried to the best of his ability to help them. He cared for the people who were strangers to him and to the ones who even offended him. Rackham clearly is someone you can trust with your life and a person you can truly call a friend. Now it's obvious he isn't perfect, that he has his own flaws which makes him human, but its the flaws that drives him to do better. Its his flaws which make him someone you can understand and that make him strong. However, Mazer Rackham isn't the only character in the book admired by its readers. Rena, a mother who had suffered the loss of her husband and part of her own family, has this remarkable amount of courage. Her home was lost to the "formics" in space, her husband, her son, what was everything to her was taken away wrongfully. How she manages takes courage alone with the individuals surrounding her out of hate for her husband and in seek of instructions. She has leadership thrust upon her and suddenly lives to take care of. To be able to do that, making the hard choices and decisions for the best everyone in her surviving crew, she's very strong and brave. Shes a mother and yet she not only has to worry about her blood-related family, but her crew also which makes her a character everyone likes. She is the character who has had tragedy and burdens fallen upon her shoulders and remains persistently a true leader with plentiful of courage to lend to the fearful and afraid around her. Another character readers like myself respect significantly, mostly for their intelligence and wisdom, is Bingwen. Bingwen, considered by most to be a genius child, is someone who is able to see the truth before any adults in his area do. That the video feeds sent to earth were not created by an individual who has spare time to tinker, but a person warning of a mass invasion of hostiles from space. In several occasions, he has invented contraptions to provide for his own needs and has given advice that was always solid and reasonable. With Rackham once terribly wounded, he devised a way to bring him to others in order to treat him and with his friend, he helped sneak into the library to see the video feeds and confirm their truths. His advice was always one that should be followed, it was not at all thought to be childish but rather more of a grown adults way of thinking. Sometimes even better. Orson Scott Card sincerely had a gift for fabricating what I believe to be the most memorable and lovable characters. While I not only loved his books for several other reasons, such as its realistic possibilities, vivid scenes, and the heavy plot, I mainly loved it for the people who came alive in the story to me. It was as if I knew them personally on a deep emotional level with situations that came to pass them by. I would highly recommend people who love to get involve with the characters in books to read this and to anyone who loves science fiction. This is surely a book to be remembered when reading any other science fiction novels. One that will always keep you hovering above on the edge of your seat hypnotized by its words.
review 2: I loved this book. The charecters are wonderfully developed and I am strongly attached to Vico, Bingwen, and Mazer. The story itself is terrifyingly accurate in terms of the massive impasse that "politics" would create if there were an alien menace. The heroes of the story do what is right in their hearts and ignore society's rules to try and save the human race and the whole damn planet. I really enjoyed the writing style, and the experience as a whole. Be forewarned, you will go on one hell of a roller coaster, and the end is an insane cliff hanger- luckily Earth Awakens, the next book is already out, so resolution is nigh. less

Did not like the children's bickering. Not Card's best.
