review 1: I met Penny Hancock at her new book launch along with Kate Rhodes (who is one of my favourite authors!) in September, so thought I would read Penny's first book as she writes in a similar style to Kate. I do love a thriller and being kept in suspense and this book surely didn't disappoint. From the very first page it left me wanting more and to find out why Sonia did the things she did and what happened to Seb and Jez. It certainly kept me up late into the night for a couple of nights as I just couldn't put it down! One of my favourite books of the year and I will definitely be buying Penny's other books! Just wish I had bought her new one at the book launch and got it signed!!
review 2: Middle aged Sonia, who is clearly absolutely bonkers, decides on a whim to... more keep the 15 year old nephew of a friend, who drops round one evening to borrow one of her husband's records. To start with she gets him drunk, drugs him and keeps him in the house, but when her husband (who travels a lot) and her daughter (who's at university) come home, she has to move him to the garage, which is cold and uncomfortable. As time passes, it becomes harder for her to contemplate letting him go, as he will obviously tell people what she has been doing. This is mainly a page turner because you want to see if the unfortunate youth survives! The whole plot is ludicrous, and when the reason why she is so crazy emerges, it doesn't seem remotely plausible that she would behave in that way subsequently. That said, the scenes on the Thames are well written and credible, and the location powerfully evoked. Ultimately I found it disappointing. less
