review 1: I was not sure about this at all as I felt that the story was quite unlikely. I am still not sure but I warmed to the book a little more near the end. the end however i felt was a bit loose. I felt it was quite tense but I also felt that considering how inept the heroine was at covering things up it was pretty unlikely that the police had not discovered her keeping Jez, I can't believe they are that inept.
review 2: I found this very uncomfortable to read as my son is the same age as Jed and so I kept imagining him in this predicament. As a result (unlike some other reviewers), I had no sympathy for Sonia at all! She's a 40-something middle-class woman living an enviable life in a large Thames-side house and who seemingly has a sudden psychotic meltdown as a re
... moresult of unresolved childhood traumas. Her friend's teenage nephew visits to borrow a CD and she decides she can't let him leave...Uncomfortable yes, but totally compelling. I raced through it desperate to know the outcome. Annoyingly the ending is a little ambiguous! Another criticism is that I didn't feel that the narration of Jed's Aunt Helen added much to the story/drama. I would have preferred the boy to have been the second narrator (the first being Sonia) as I wanted to know what he was thinking and have an insight into his actions. Nevertheless a very good read and a 4 star - and the area of central London the novel is set in is beautifully depicted. less
