review 1: A worthy successor to the first volume in this series. Not a lot of tension until the very end, and not a lot of mystery either, since what happened to the victim, at least in general outline, is pretty clear to the reader early on. But nevertheless fun to watch the detectives, who know less than we do, figure out ways to figure it out. And even more important is spending time on the Outer Hebrides, becoming acquainted with the people, the treeless, peaty, rocky landscape, and learning about how life was and is lived there. Almost every page has a new and slightly different description of the clouds, sun, sea, rain, and wind, since those things are of life-threatening interest to inhabitants of the island. And, unlike here in the midwest of America, the weather changes fro... morem moment to moment. A fascinating read. I'm looking forward to the third volume.
review 2: In the second book of the Lewis trilogy Fin MacLeod resigns from the Edinburgh police force to return to his native island of Lewis. Upon returning he has to come to terms with why he left the island in the first place. There is a body discovered in the peat which after further investigating may be related to his childhood sweetheart. This is a gripping mystery which is unbelievably sad in its description of poor children in orphanages, desperate living conditions on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. less
