review 1: When the book opens, a man has been killed and gutted on the Isle of Lewis. Because the MO is similar to another murder in Edinburgh, the investigator, a native of the island, is sent to Lewis to see if there is a connection. What follows is not a straight forward investigation of the murder but a reprise of Fin MacLeod's childhood and adolescence, which, as you know it must, eventually connects to the murder. The book is most remarkable for its depiction of the island and the characters who inhabit it. Yes, I am reading its sequel, as soon as I can get my eager little hands on it.

... moreawn to books with bleak, bare landscapes and themes, and this one fits the bill. The culture of Isle of Lewis, and especially the annual voyage to outer island An Sgeir that plays such a key role, is even more compelling to me than the murder mystery. I'm hooked. less

I enjoyed this book, some suspense but I enjoyed the writing and description of Lewis.
