review 1: An absolute belter! I have to admit I felt a little let down at the ending in All the Colours of Darkness although it was still a great read. But this . . . what a return to form. Absolutely superb. The tendrils of the events, emotions and characters in these Banks books weave their way backwards and forwards throughout the stories; as a result every read becomes richer and more satisfying. This has to be the best yet. Top job Mr Robinson.
review 2: Although it never occurred to me to want to hear anything from her voice, I was interested to hear Tracy's perspective after 19 books. However it was whiny and self-indulgent. Granted, Robinson wrote those things decently, but it illuminated how Banks' pensiveness has also bled into whiny self-indulgence in the last... more few books. A perfectly valid direction to take a middle-aged dissatisfied detective, but I'm wondering whether it is something I wish to read anymore. less
