review 1: Ginny, an expert on moths like her father before her, lives on her own in a rambling old house where she has resided all her life. Her sister, Vivien, hasn't been home for nearly fifty years, but one day she decides to return. We learn about events at the family home before Vivien left and subsequently, what happened to the girls and their parents.I enjoyed this novel, but it left me with questions regarding the main character, Ginny. As the story is told by her, we only get a few insights into her true character. Is she lying about events that she was directly involved in or is there perhaps something about herself and her personality that she is unaware of?This is a clever novel that deals with obsessional behaviour and family rifts. You'll learn a bit about moths a... morelong the way too!
review 2: The Virago edition is titled 'The Behaviour of Moths' but I can only find it under 'The Sister' on Goodreads. I was gripped by this well-told tale, perfectly balanced between compassion and Gothic horror. Both sisters are exemplars of Larkin's parental dictum. It's a sad story but strangely suspenseful and engrossing, through progressive revelation of what was really going on in this damaged family. less
