review 1: The love song of Miss Queenie Hennessy could be described as a companion novel to the Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, as Queenie is the ultimate objective of Harold ' s near 700 mile walk to Northumberland to visit his old work colleague as she ends her days in a hospice run by nuns. Naturally, being a hospice characters come and go with some frequency and there is no attempt to sugar coat the ultimate reality of life there. Despite this and despite the story being one of unrequited love and domestic tragedy, the book manages to be both optimistic and uplifting and also funny. There is also an interesting twist at the end and a very bitter sweet conclusion. It would help to have read Harold Fry first (though it was some time since I did) although it would certainly... more be possible to read them the other way round or even at the same time! Highly recommended!
review 2: Two years ago I wrote that The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was my 'book of the year'. Yesterday I finished it's companion novel 'The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy' and can definitely say it's this year's best book. This is the story of the woman who inspired Harold Fry to walk across England . It's a beautifully written story about love, forgiveness and honouring the 'ordinary life'. When you don't want a book to end, you know it's worth recommending to your friends. less

Really 4 and a half. I think I preferred this book to Harold Fry. That final twist was just perfect.
