review 1: So, of the three novellas that came out for the Fire and Thorns series, I was most excited about this one (especially after Hector gains such significance in book 2).Maybe it's because its been so long since I read the books, but I had a hard time keeping the people and places straight. Maybe it's because I listened to part of the story instead of reading it. Either way, I was confused for the second third of the book. The last third of the novella was strong. I appreciate the added insight into Hector's early life and that none of this is crucial to the existing plot lines of the novels.
review 2: Probably my favorite of the three prequels. Hector just reeks of competence and loyalty. He is definitely someone I would want to have on my side. The story here was
... morea tiny bit predictable after a point, but that point will be different for different people. Regardless, it was still an engaging and interesting read. I felt like we got to meet a lot of people who helped shape Hector into the person we first meet in the novels, especially Queen Rosaura. I'm not sure King Alejandro really deserved any of the women in his life. less
