review 1: 3.5 stars. There really is some beautiful writing in this piece, but ultimately, I was left feeling distanced from the characters. I felt as though I was observing them, rather than moving with them through the work. As other reviewers have noted, it wasn't until the mention of music mages came along, about halfway through the piece, that it was clear this was a fantasy story. At first it seemed these mages were imprisoned for raising rebellion through their songs. Later, it seems that at least some music mages obtain physical powers through their songs. I like the premise of this story, but I feel more time was needed to fully develop its potential. Still, it's worth a look, since it's such a short read, especially if you are curious (as I am) about fantasy short sto... moreries.
review 2: This was way too short. I want more Rae Carson! I'm very excited that I'll be reading The Bitter Kingdom soon!Like with her trilogy, this novella creates such an interesting world. There are music mages and muses. And they are in prison. I want to know so much more about this world!Rae Carson writes beautifully. She did an excellent job describing sounds in this novella.I give this novella a 4/5 and recommend it to any Rae Carson fan like me looking to devour anything by her. less

I loved it and would have given it 5 stars but it was too short! Even for a short story!
