review 1: Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness. Elisa was chosen by "God" to fulfill his will. However, this book should not be "the chosen" read for teens. There are three troublesome reasons why. While the book talks about "God", caution must be given due to the traditions within the Spanish culture. The ceremonies in this book have some of the same aspects of the choosing ceremony in the book Divergent. I think that's where people are getting the similarities from. During the ceremony the priest asks what the seeker wants from God. He pricks their finger and then drips their blood over some coals. This is not the Christian religion! Again I refer back to my college studies of psychology, cults and criminal justice. This book has some cultish themes and Christians sho... moreuld take heed and be warned. I wrote this same warning in regards to the choosing ceremony in my review of Divergent. Another troubling aspect is that in the story, Elisa was kidnapped. She then befriends her kidnappers and even helps them in their war. This is a psychological dysfunction called the Stockholm syndrome. Many times we hear of a person that was kidnapped and he or she ends up falling in love with the kidnapper. Elisa’s captors wanted her to use sorcery to save them from the continued war. They didn't know that she was the King's wife. The King didn't want to help the people of this village, but instead take the easy way out. Later, Elisa makes a plan with the people (all children with one adult priest) in the village. Since they can't fight the enemy army straight on, they plan to weaken them so they will be less powerful when they reach the King. People were mad that they have to help the King because they don't want to pay taxes on their land. Elisa says she knows a way that the King will help. She exposes that she is the King's wife and he owes her a wedding gift. You can clearly see how she even helps the whole village of the kidnappers in forming a plan for war. Corroborating with and also falling in love with one of the kidnappers is never okay and the author should not be sending a message that it is. The third troublesome aspect of this book is that we see how Elisa consoles herself with food. That may be okay if the author provided some overcoming of this disorder, but she doesn't. The book in numerous places goes on and on about food descriptions. I've wondered if the author ever had or still has an issue with the same disorder. You may think I'm going a little overboard, but if you read the book and see how often that food is brought up or described, it would make you wonder if you were reading a food diary or novel. There are a lot of good reads out there, but this novel has too many issues to be one of them.
