review 1: One of the best YA fantasy novels I have ever read. The setting was amazing, the characters lovable, and it had an MC you can root for. The Spanish influences is what really sold it for me. Fantasy is usually set in a medieval or French-style environment. It was great to see a different setting. It's been a while since I loved an MC. Elisa had flaws and insecurities, but that was what made her perfect. She was the chosen one, a trope I'm tired of seeing, but was written well in this book. Elisa isn't you typical mary-sue. She was aware of being overweight, not ignorant of her incredibly sexy beauty (I'm looking at all of you female paranormal MCs.) She learned to use her powers instead of mastering them without trying. She actually did things instead of having a boy do them... more for her! The novel ended so nicely, none of that cheap cliffhanger ending crap. I personally think it can be a standalone. I'm almost afraid of continuing the trilogy for fear that the quality would go down. (It's happened plenty of times in the past, and I don't want it to happen for this one!) But since I loved it I'll definitely read the other two.
review 2: Not sure how to review this novel. I enjoyed this quick read, it was fast paced and entertained me; several characters had flare. But, it was so very focused on religion and prayer. With such focus on religion, there was little to no zeal or passion that accompanies such devout religion. As a result the religion fell short and was one note. Elisa, the heroine is uninteresting. She eats away her insecurity and is fat. She constantly thinks about food and is eating scones. She is petty. Then suddenly she loses weight and has a few reasons to feel proud of herself. Boys start liking her, girls like her, she steps out of her sister's shadow, and boom, she is still a dumb sixteen year old who prays all the time with little answers given in return. She is so self centered. I don't love that suddenly she is a cool girl because she isn't fat anymore. People die around Elisa, and yet the sorrow and pain don't translate to the pages.I won't read the others in the series. On the other hand, I started it one night and finished it the next night. It was easy enough to get into the story and finish it. But I'd be bored with a second story about Elisa. less

Caught my attention at the beginning because of the non-"perfect" sized main character. It was really refreshing to read about a hero who has the same issues as an actual human. As for the entire story, I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the last half. I can't criticize too much as I finished it in three days, so I obviously liked it...I just thought it got a little weird, (and slightly depressing), a bit toward the end, and the religious undertones were just a bit strong for me at times. But a pretty decent YA read. 3.5 stars

This is a promising series, but the first installment left a few things to be desired.
