[Manga] Kamisama Kiss vol. 1 – 5

Kamisama Kiss by Julietta Suzuki

Nanami Momozono is alone and homeless after her dad skips town to evade his gambling debts and the debt collectors kick her out of her apartment. So when a man she’s just saved from a dog offers her his home, she jumps at the opportunity. But it turns out that his place is a shrine, and Nanami has unwillingly taken over his job as a local deity!

Nanami has all kinds of new responsabilities she doesn’t understand, dangers she’s unaware of, and a cranky ex-familiar who’s… actually pretty hot. What’s a new-fledged godling to do? – Goodreads

Instead of a review of the manga so far, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about what I like about Nanami as a character.

I love that she is proactive. The only other female protagonist I can think of that took matters into her own hands was Kyoko from Skip Beat. Nanami doesn’t wait for things to happen or for someone to give her a helping hand. She stays strong in the face of adversity and figures things out on her own. She’s strong, stands up for herself, holds firmly to what she believes, but she’s not obstinate. It seems to me that a lot of the protagonists I’ve read are annoyingly obstinate. It’s nice to have a reasonable heroine.

I also love that she doesn’t let Tomoe bully her. He’s a demon, with demonic powers, and physically bigger and stronger than her. She is reasonably cautious of him, but she doesn’t let fear get in the way of standing up for herself. Perhaps my favorite interaction between the two is when Nanami is being chased by another demon and in order to get away she climbs a tree. Tomoe shows up and tells Nanami that he’ll help her if she admits she was wrong and begs for his help. She flat out refuses. At this point I expected her to say something cliche like, “I’d rather die than beg for your help”. Instead,  she grabs onto his leg, pulls him down with her and kisses him. The kiss seals a contract between the two which forces Tomoe to do as she asks. She asks Tomoe to save her, thus saving her life and her pride. You go girl. Not so much for kissing, but for quick thinking.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the manga and will continue reading the series.

Score: 5/5
