About the Author
I started writing . . . short stories in the third grade. I grew up in an impoverished family that had no money for children’s toys or entertainment. We didn’t have a television or telephone until I was a teen. I began writing for fun, and soon discovered how much more fun it was when others appreciated what I’d written.
What I love most about writing . . . is the sense of accomplishment when a scene works well.
The toughest thing about writing . . . is editing out great scenes because they don’t fit the overall flow of the story.
The writer I most admire . . . depends on the genre of that element of the novel that I’m writing. I’m into genre bender stories as opposed to mainstream good fits into a genre. For example, if the element depends on good everyday horror, I would most admire King. I hope that what I produce will always be considered literary with elements of this and that genre. So, in general, I most admire Charles Dickens because he believed that a good story must do much more than merely entertain.
My lifelong hero . . . is my mother, a downtrodden victim of poverty and domestic violence who found her voice to demand respect for the rights of other victims.
If I wasn’t a writer, I would be . . . in jail. Writing provided a channel for my emotions to be directed toward positive outcomes, which paved the way for logical decisions in my life dedicated to the welfare of needful children, a career as a children’s advocate that lasted over forty years.
Other than writing, I am really good at . . . empathy, a skill learned from my mother.
When I am writing, I listen to . . . obscure psychedelic and mind challenging rock music that many have never heard about.
Favorite Novels: I’m not sure that you have enough bandwidth for me to make a complete list, so here’s a few. Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions helped me stay strong as a children’s advocate and as a writer, and how to experiment with my writing style. Watership Down by Richard Adams was such a sweet adventure that some of this element just is a necessary ingredient of even the scariest or saddest story that I would want to write. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Another Roadside Attraction by Tom Robbins. …………
Favorite Movies: The same as with favorite books, there are a bunch: The Color Purple, Avatar, It Happened One Night, Harvey, The Empire Strikes Back, ET, The Day the Earth Stood Still…..
Favorite Actors/Actresses: Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Scarlott Johansson, Charlize Theron…..
Favorite Sport Team: West Virginia University football and basketball – the only sports that I never miss a game.
Nobody knows that I . . . sometimes cry when I hear news about maltreated children.
I wish I could stop . . . smoking cigarettes, permanently.
Best advice I’ve received: “Don’t let the butt holes get you down, Bobby,” Aunt Grace.
Worst advice I’ve received: “That’s just the way it is, there’s no point in trying to change anything, just a waste of time,” many people.
Advice to aspiring authors: Never give up, but don’t “bet the family farm” on paid promotions.
Synopsis:
Lacy Dawn’s father relives the Gulf War, her mother’s teeth are rotting out, and her best friend is murdered by the meanest daddy on Earth. Life in the hollow is hard. She has one advantage — an android was inserted into her life and is working with her to cure her parents. He wants something in exchange. It’s up to her to save the Universe. She doesn’t mind saving the universe, but her family and friends come first.
Rarity from the Hollow is adult literary science fiction filled with tragedy, comedy and satire. A Children’s Story. For Adults.
“The most enjoyable science fiction novel I have read in years.”
— Temple Emmet Williams, Author, former editor for Reader’s Digest
“A fun, sometimes cleverly-gonzo, and even inspiring tale about an undaunted girl’s close encounter of the weird kind.” – David Brin, Award Winning SciFi Author
“Quirky, profane, disturbing… In the space between a few lines we go from hardscrabble realism to pure sci-fi/fantasy. It’s quite a trip.”
Evelyn Somers, The Missouri Review
. “…a hillbilly version of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy…what I would have thought impossible; taken serious subjects like poverty, ignorance, abuse…tongue-in-cheek humor without trivializing them…profound…a funny book that most sci-fi fans will thoroughly enjoy.” — Awesome Indies (Gold Medal)
“…sneaks up you and, before you know it, you are either laughing like crazy or crying in despair, but the one thing you won’t be is unmoved…a brilliant writer.” —Readers’ Favorite (Gold Medal)
“Rarity from the Hollow is an original and interesting story of a backwoods girl who saves the Universe in her fashion. Not for the prudish.” —Piers Anthony, New York Times bestselling author
“…Good satire is hard to find and science fiction satire is even harder to find.” — The Baryon Review
“…Brilliant satires such as this are genius works of literature in the same class as Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm.’ I can picture American Lit professors sometime in the distant future placing this masterpiece on their reading list.” — Marcha’s Two-Cents Worth
“…I know this all sounds pretty whack, and it is, but it’s also quite moving. Lacy Dawn and her supporting cast – even Brownie, the dog – are some of the most engaging characters I’ve run across in a novel in some time….” — Danehy-Oakes, Critic whose book reviews often appear in the New York Review of Science Fiction
“… The author gives us much pause for thought as we read this uniquely crafted story about some real life situations handled in very unorthodox ways filled with humor, sarcasm, heartfelt situations and fun.” — Fran Lewis: Just Reviews/MJ Magazine
