Series: Three Dark Crowns, #1

Source: Hardcover, 398 pages

Summary:

When kingdom come, there will be one.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

Rating: I gave this 4.5/5 stars on Goodreads!

Thoughts: Holy cow! This was gooooood.

I have been wanting to read this literally since it came out. I know, I’m aware it has been a while. What is even worse is that I’ve had this book since it was released. So yeah, I’m slow to read this, but I am so glad that I finally did!!

It was everything I wanted it to be. Going into this, I knew I was going to like it, but I had seen reviews about it being slow, so I was worried I wouldn’t like it because of that. I will say that it does start off slow, but that is because we literally have 3 separate introductions to each sister, side characters for each, and 3 different settings and types of magic. That had to be set up though, so that was understandable. It took me a little bit to get a feel for the world and each sister, but once I did, the story really took off! I’m a huge fan.

So let’s talk sisters. Katharine is the poisoner. Arsinoe is the naturalist. Mirabella is the elemental. My favorite so far is Katharine. My least favorite is Mirabella. I like Arsinoe fine. I did like Arsinoe’s storyline more than the other two sisters, but as a person, Katharine is my girl. So far. Each sister had such a different personality. Each sister was great, in her own way. This book was really just setting up for the showdown this is to come, so if you are looking for that in this one, you will probably be disappointed. This book really gives you a feel for each sister and lets you love them before your heart gets torn out in the coming books. Awesome. Haha.

The side characters are really great, too. Jules is my favorite! There was one specific character that is a complete and utter jerk. I’m really hoping there is an explanation in the next book, otherwise the character is one of the worst jerks I’ve read in a while. But aside from that, the side characters are also killing it! And I mean like each sister’s side characters. All of them! They’re all so good!!

But seriously, the writing is so captivating. Even when it was “slow”, I was still flipping pages needing to know what was going to happen. Blake has a really great writing style. I’m definitely going to be looking into her other books.

The plot itself is just so intriguing, but reading each sisters’ storylines just adds so much emotion to the story. It is dark and addicting. You’re going to learn all about each sister and grow to love, or maybe hate, them, knowing that only one of them will be standing by the end of the series. I mean, as long as the synopsis stays real, haha. I loved the whole plot. It is just good, so good.

The book had my heart pounding by the end. So much stress!! There are just so many awesome things happening that are scary and stressful and fun and all the things! That ending thoughhhhh. I need to pick up One Dark Throne ASAP.

This book is highly underrated. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I cannot wait to read on!

Have you read this? What are your thoughts?!

Thanks for reading! (:
