(From Goodreads) A fun, full-color look at everyone’s favorite cheese dip, with history, tips, facts, and 50 recipes from beloved food blogger Lisa Fain, “the Homesick Texan.”
Queso (aka chile con queso) is a spicy, cheesy, comforting cult favorite that has long been a delicious addition to any party, barbecue, or family gathering. This appealing and accessible book features a mix of down-home standards and contemporary updates, from historical, regional, and Mexican quesos to vegan and dessert quesos, including Chile Verde Con Queso, Squash Blossom Queso Fundido, Fajita Queso, Cactus and Corn Queso Poblano, Frito Salad with Queso Dressing, Pulled Pork Queso Blanco, and Sausage Queso Biscuits. Whether you’re relaxing with friends, having a few people over to watch the football game, or entertaining a hungry crowd, queso is the perfect party food for good times.
ReviewI’ve always told my family that cheese should be its own food group, and this cookbook reaffirms this belief. QUESO! is a one-stop book of ooey-gooey cheesy perfection. Whether you’re looking for queso to use on your tacos or a traditional dip for tortilla chips, this cookbook delivers from start to finish.
This cookbook divides the queso recipes into five types:
1. Chili Con Queso, The Early Years
2. Tex-Mex Classics
3. On the Border
4. Quirky Quesos
5. Queso in the Wild
I’m definitely a Tex-Mex girl, so I gravitated towards those recipes, but I enjoyed looking through (and drooling over!) all of the recipes. QUESO! also features a section on accompaniments, which feature queso’s partners in crime (think guacamole and Pico de Gallo). Are you hungry yet?
The cookbook’s pictures are fantastic and make you want to lick your lips and head into the kitchen. I appreciated the simplicity of the recipes as well as the additional information behind each recipe. Lisa Fain clearly did her research and knows her cheeses and chiles well!
The only thing I didn’t like about this cookbook was the layout. There was additional information about each recipe, which was super cool, but the font is large and draws your eye to it every time you flip the page. When I’m looking through a cookbook, I prefer the recipe to be the most important thing on the page. The recipe should draw your eye–not the asides.
I tried one recipe from the cookbook over the weekend, the West Texas Green Chili Queso Blanco, and let me tell you, it was fantastic! Yes, it’s more effort than I’d normally put into queso, but it was worth it. It’s now my new favorite queso recipe, and the family agrees wholeheartedly.
Overall, this cookbook was fantastic, and I highly recommend it to cheese lovers and queso aficionados.
I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review.
