Sometimes life throws curve balls. And the thing about a curve ball is that they are unexpected- like the frozen hot water pipe or a child who sneaks out. You can’t plan for a curve ball. They just show up unexpected and you just have to deal with them.
I am not sure if you can actually be grateful for a curve ball–or at least not the ones that come with chaos and negativity. (I would be very grateful for the “you won a million dollars” curve ball, but my daughters tell me that I have a better change if I actually bought lottery tickets)
The reaction to the curve ball that will determine if any thankfulness can be found in the situation. Do you give up? Do you whine? Do you stomp your feet? (literally or figuratively?) Do you lay down and give up? Or do you decide what to do next? Make a new plan? Keep moving forward?
Your choice creates your new world. And as you look back, maybe you can see the good that came from the curve ball. I cannot say that I am grateful for the rough times that I have gone through. The pain that I have felt. The losses I have experienced. But I am grateful for the lessons that I have learned, the strength of character that they have brought me, and the friendships that have deepened.
Discovering Gratitude:
* Lazy days!
* Good books!
* Walks with the dog!
* Dads that check on you (even when you are 40!)
