If you follow me on social media, you might have seen that I’ve been planning on self-publishing it for a while. Now, the story is finished, meaning that this little dream is finally becoming a reality. The book is now available for purchase on Amazon. Here is what it looks like:
Since I haven’t worked out the best plan for promotion yet, I decided that I would do a tag so I can explain the book further to anyone who is interested.
1) What is the working title of your book?
The book is called ‘Beauty in the Breakdown’. It comes from a song under the same name by The Scene Aesthetic which I fell in love with after hearing it for the first time.
2) Where did the idea come from for your book?
As always, the inspiration came from endless hours spent analysing song lyrics, watching music videos, and researching films. The idea of Bonnie and Clyde was a big influence in the early chapters but music video plots took over from then onwards.
3) What genre does your book fall under?
‘Beauty in the Breakdown’ is young adult fiction with many romantic and action influences, although it is also categorised as contemporary romance.
4) Which actors would you choose to play in your movie rendition?
I’ve only ever seen one character as an actor, and that was Chloe Grace Moretz as Clara. She has the innocent, baby-faced appearance that I’ve always seen for Clara.
I haven’t really put much thought into the rest of the cast, especially since many of their appearances aren’t described in full detail. I think I’d rather have actors who can portray the character well rather than look like them and do an average job at acting.
5) What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?
‘Beauty in the Breakdown’ represents the importance of trust and self-discovery in an unstable lifestyle through the eyes of Josh Ray, someone who believes that there is always something beautiful in a breakdown.
6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
At the moment, it is self-published so I have full creative control over the appearance and content of the book. I can also make the prices lower than most books, meaning that I can make the physical copies and eBooks as affordable as possible.
However, when I gain more writing experience, I’d love to have the opportunity to be represented by an agency.
7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
I think I’ve technically started writing it in October 2014, even though I eventually decided to take a long break from writing and edit/rewrite everything I had done so far. The improved version was published in December 2015, just over a year ago. It must’ve taken anywhere between one and two years to write it.
8) Who or what inspired you to write the book?
Two music videos and one song. As mentioned earlier, the song was ‘Beauty In The Breakdown’ by The Scene Aesthetic. The music videos were ‘By Now’ by Marianas Trench and ‘Robbers’ by The 1975. Both videos are very similar in content but take different spins on the same topic. These ideas were put into words and then into the book.
9) What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
This book is about broken people, written for broken people. The book is mainly driven by the characters so their personalities – the good and bad aspects – are all essential to moving the plot forwards.
‘Beauty in the Breakdown’ is now available to purchase on Amazon.
