When I was growing up, we said things like “Groovy,” and “Outta Sight!” Today I’m revisiting another favorite: “Keep on Truckin.'”
According to the Urban Dictionary, this was an “extremely popular 1960’s hippie saying that was made ubiquitously famous by the one-of-a-kind, extremely esoteric and eventually iconic comic strips and books which appeared and evolved from within the exquisitely unique mind of the mad-genius cartoonist R. Crumb.”
It goes on to that “These three simple words of encouragement reinforced the then-prevailing idea that people should be able to feel confident about staying true to their own chosen life path and not allowing the outside world to get them down or force them to change who they wanted to be.”
Those three simple words still work today as many of us are calling our members of the Congress and Senate, trying to stay true to our beliefs despite the forces of the “outside world” pushing us down through legislation that may remove what many of us feel are our basic rights – as well as basic rights of our most vulnerable students.
Today I called my Congressman only to get a busy signal. When directed to leave a message, I discovered the voice mail box was full. Now I’m going to write him and, of course, I will call later.
I will “Keep On Truckin'” and I hope you will too. Together, I believe we can make a difference. And that would be “Outta Sight!”
