I keep seeing glowing reviews all over Goodreads and book blogs for Leigh Bardugo novels. Leigh has been on my ‘Authors to check out’ list for a while but I just haven’t got around to it. So, I decided to give this short story a read to see if I liked Bardugo’s style. Girl, I like your style.
This short story is book 0.5 in the acclaimed Grishaverse. It tells of Nadya. When Nadya’s mother dies, her father marries a new woman that Nadya believes is the monster responsible for the girls that keep going missing. Nadya finds a witch’s cabin in the woods on day. From there… witchy things happen. Look, it’s a super short story, I can’t go into too much detail, ok?
I really liked this story. It has lots of elements from well known fairy tales and reads similar to a Grimm tale. The food descriptions throughout made me so fucking hungry! Overall, this definitely did it’s job of piquing my interest ready to start Shadow and Bone.
