review 1: When this book opens, Chong, Lilah, Nix and Benny are still in search of the jet and they are grieving the loss of Tom. So is the reader. But, we are given scarcely a chance to draw a breath, before the action kicks off and we find Benny trapped in a ravine, surrounded by zombies, and trying to save the little girl, who literally falls from above into his arms. We are off and running and we never look back. Non-stop action, plenty of food for thought and a new group of antagonists to worry about. The zombies are the least of this group's worries.
review 2: This is hands down the best zombie apocalypse narrative I've seen. Maberry does a fantastic job of balancing a cynical view of world politics with youthful idealism and obstacles that seem insurmountable unt
... moreil at least most of his main characters surmount them. But it's also believable, because the battle tactics he discusses are real and effective. It gets dark, but it also maintains hope. The characters are believable, compelling, and sympathetic, and these books are page-turners. The books are long but otherwise exactly the sort of thing toward which I'd steer a reluctant reader. But they're also more than skin deep; the ethical concerns and ideology is pretty solid for an adult reader. Highly recommended! less
