The world of anime, if you’re just venturing out, is a big, scary looking mess of animation. There’s all these colourful looking cover arts and genres named in an – often – unfamiliar language.
So let me introduce a new segment of my blog – Anime for All. Inspired by the new year (albeit three weeks into it) as well as friends who watch the occasional anime but don’t know where to start, I’ll be covering a different genre every week and featuring a couple of different shows each week to help out those who are perhaps new to the medium! So – here’s the first part of my guide on what to watch if you’re new to the world of anime…or if you simply want to explore a genre for the first time!
This week, I’m going to be focusing on action series!
Action is a popular genre with its genre having no restriction on possibilities. From battling Titans to duelling with cards – the chances of finding an action anime that you’ll like is pretty high! For the newbies, I recommend Attack on Titan, One Punch Man and Fullmetal Alchemist. I may have my doubts about some of these shows myself, but these shows are all staples within the anime medium and I do think all of these provide solid storylines within the action genre that are engaging enough to keep someone, particularly someone new to anime, watching and wanting more.
All of these shows are available to watch on the following streaming sites:
- Crunchyroll
- Netflix
- Funimation
- Hulu
At the time of writing, however, One Punch Man is currently only availble on these sites in the US and Canada. In Australia and New Zealand, it is also available on AnimeLab.
I’ve picked these three shows due to, quite obviously, the action within them, but I’ve also picked them for their nostalgia values. These shows, particularly Fullmetal Alchemist, always made me feel quite nostalgic when watching them. Of course, the focus on this post isn’t nostalgia and so I’ll be focusing on the action from this point on, but maybe a post on nostalgic anime may be a good idea in the future…
Regardless, without further ado, let’s begin at looking at the shows!
Attack on Titan follows the story of a young boy named Eren Yeager who dedicates his life to aid in the eradication of Titans – the gigantic humanoid creatures that almost made mankind extinct. Enlisting in the Survey Corps alongside his adopted sister, Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend, Armin, the main story is currently spread over two seasons that are collectively 37 episodes in length, with OVAs taking part within the timeskip that happens in Season 1. Approximate time to complete: 16 hours
One Punch Man focuses on the seemingly ordinary Saitama, but ‘ordinary’ isn’t what you’d probably describe him as! Why? Saitama has one mission and that is to follow his childhood dream of becoming a supehero. Following an extremely strict workout routine for three years (at the cost of his hair), Saitama is now incredibly powerful. So powerful, in fact, that it only takes one punch for him to take down an opponment. This has lead to an unexpected problem – he’s become bored of it all and has lost the thrill of fighting. With Genos, a teenage cyborg, wanting to become his disciple, will Saitama thrive as a superhero after all? The story of One Punch Man is collated nicely in one season that is 12 episodes left (a second season has been confirmed, though!) as well as seven OVA specials. Approximate time to complete: 6.4 hours
The last show that I’m featuring this week is Fullmetal Alchemist (and in this instance, I’m talking about the original series!). Fullmetal Alchemist follows the journey of Edward Elric, a young alchemist, and his younger brother, Alphonse, as they embark on a journey to seek the Phillosopher’s Stone – an object that allows them to override the fundamental law of alchemy: to gain something, an alchemist must sacrifice something of equal value. However, they soon discover that their journey is much more difficult than they initially think and they are lead to the epicenter of a battle far darker than they could ever imagine… This incredible saga (if we’re just taking into consideration the original TV series) is spread over 51 action-packed episodes. Approximate time to complete: 20.4 hours
Hopefully you liked reading this and have maybe found a new show to watch! If you’ve already seen these shows, let me know what you think of them in the comment section below!
As this is going to be a (hopefully) weekly segment, I hope you guys support this and give criticism where necesscary! Please feel free to share these posts with anyone who you feel might benefit from them!
Until next time!
