review 1: Has Molly lost all common sense? Is she daft? Why would she do some of the things she did in this book? Why would she risk herself and her unborn child for a woman she never knew? Once again, Molly defies all logic. She doesn't think about her actions and how they affect others, namely her husband and unborn child. Molly claims to want a partner in Daniel, but she refuses to be one herself. She repeatedly breaks her promises to Daniel and does whatever she wants despite his objections. If I were Daniel, I'd start divorce proceedings since Molly obviously exercises poor judgment in everything. What next? use her child as a pawn in her next case? Molly, it's time to grow up now; it's not just *you* anymore.
review 2: An interesting and entertaining mystery, altho
... moreugh as usual, luck and coincidence rule the day a little too much to make it a great mystery. What downgrades this from say, a four-star rating, to a three-star rating or perhaps even a two-star rating, is the character of Daniel. Simply put, Daniel has become incredibly odious over the course of these books. I am sick and tired of his Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde persona. One moment he's hurling abusive, illogical accusations at Molly, and the next moment he's a loving, tender, solicitous husband. I don't care if it is the early 1900s, we are left wondering why in the world the independent, strong willed, feminist Molly would ever marry such a jerk. I feel like Rhys Bowen has really painted herself into a corner with his character. Over the course of these books, I would expect some sort of development in Daniel's character that might make us understand why Molly would marry him. So far, it seems like Molly is the only one who understands what she sees in Daniel. Daniel's ongoing treatment of Sid and Gus is becoming especially irritating. It seems to defy human nature that, after all of Sid and Gus's unwavering support and extraordinary kindness, Daniel would not have at least slightly warmed to them. Instead, he's continues to barely tolerate them, despite the many times that they have come to the rescue of Molly and even himself. Perhaps it is no coincidence that his character is all but absent from the next book in the series, which I also just finished. He has become a real problem if you ask me. I will say, in general, Bowen sacrifices consistency in her character development for the sake of plot. As a side note, the audiobook of this one has some editing issues. Lots of sounds of intakes of breath and swallowing from the narrator which haven't been present in any of the other audiobooks in this series. less
