Molly Murphy Mysteries
review 1: Rhys Bowen has reached the zenith of perfection in her eighth novel in the Molly Murphy series. Molly and her private investigation business are in the midst of influenza season epidemic and her friends Gus and Sid and several Vassar graduates are picketing for women's rights to vote and enlist Molly to join in a parade to carry placards sayings things like: "Women can do anything a man can do except vote." When men started taunting the women, the police arrested the women for inciting a riot and took them to jail. Fortunately, Daniel had been reinstated as Chief of police and quickly released them. Molly gains two new cases from the Vassar women. For the first, Emily Boswell is convinced her uncle stole her inheritance and asks Molly to uncover the truth behind her p... morearents' deaths. The second is Emily's roommate Fanny who suspects her husband is cheating and wants proof so she can divorce him.Molly's reputation is spreading and she often takes on more cases then she can handle at one time. There are several of her friends who are dying from the influenza, but Molly sense something else might be due to some type of poison being given to the ill women. Going into the dead person's room, Molly notices a lot of hair had fallen out asks Daniel if that signifies someone has been poisoned. Tests verify that Thallium was found in the bodies of the three girls, and it is up to Molly to prove who did it, why they did it and how. Will she live up to the task?Rhys always introduces some new element into her story lines and keeps the reader up-to-date on the latest innovations, social customs, and changes in the New York landscape. In this novel, she introduces poisons, the reporter, Nellie Bly, The Easter Parade for the wealthy to display their attire, for the Vassar graduates to march for the rights of women to vote, and the use of an automobile in the Police department. Reading her novels is like taking a class in the 1900s, but with the most amazing characters to teach the class. I love this series.
review 2: In a Gilded Cage is a return to normalcy for Molly Murphy's young man, Daniel Sullivan, as he is reinstated to his position as Captain in the New York City police force. Daniel is ready to get on with life now, which to him means settling down with Molly as his wife and moving to a home that is their own. Molly, is anything but settled, as she is introduced to more new aspects of the independent woman. Her friends, Sid and Gus bring Molly into the awareness of the women's suffragette movement, talking her into participating in a plea for the right-to-vote walk during the New York City famous Easter Parade. Of course, the women are arrested, and Molly finds herself once again explaining to Daniel her involvement in a "radical" cause. Molly also meets an interesting group of Vassar graduates, classmates of Sid's and Guss's, which leads to two cases for Molly's detective agency of one. Within the framework of an influenza epidemic in the city, certain of these Vassar women die, leading Molly to expand the scope of her original investigations to possible murder through poisonings. As Molly works to uncover an insidious scheme of revenge, she struggles with what the role of a wife should and would be, and she wonders if she can ever give up the independence she enjoys as a single working woman. As usual, Ms. Bown provides plenty of glimpses into the world of early twentieth century New York City, from the designated roles of women and men to the early days of the famous Dakota apartment building. less
