Her Royal Spyness
review 1: Faced with a dismal, cold, cheerless Christmas in Scotland with her hated sister-in-law and her sister-in-law's relatives, Georgie is desperate to escape. By sheer chance, she notices a help wanted notice for a young lady of impeccable background to act as hostess at Gorzley Hall for a house party. No one's background is more impeccable than Georgie's, being the daughter of a duke and 35th in line to the throne of England, so her application is accepted with alacrity. Good food, a warm house, and a surprise guest make Georgie much more optimistic, until she realizes that as usual she is in the middle of murder and mayhem. This time, however, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the murders, and there is one every single day. Well-plotted, suspenseful, romantic, and... more quirky, this is a delightful holiday read. An appendix offers tips for hosting one's own real English Christmas.
review 2: Usually I like to read series in order, but somehow I missed this one and read its sequel first. And yet, strangely, where I found the sequel ho-hum, this one had a far stronger plot. Even though I read it toward the end of spring, rather than around the time of year when it's set (and I somehow imagine Bowen expected people to read it), the story kept me interested in more than just the multi-book romantic arc. I also really enjoyed Bowen's section at the end with recipes and games for those interested in creating their own old-English Christmas. Definitely one of the stronger books thus far in the series, even if the characters sometimes seemed a bit too callous about the mounting deaths around them. less

I read it quickly, but it somehow still felt a bit slow. Overall, I loved it.
