review 1: This is a great start to an interesting series. Lots of action, mystery, us-against-the-world mentality as Amy and Dan Cahill are pitted against relatives in a race to find clues to incredible power and... well, nobody knows for sure!I read this to know more about this series for readers' advisory purposes. I enjoyed it and feel that children will also gravitate to this bigger-than-them idea of a race around the world for clues. There is a great amount of historical facts in this that could lead a reader to research people like Ben Franklin more. The library-positive message is also pretty awesome. As an adult reading it, there are certain elements that just don't sit right with me. It's a bit too kid-fantastical, in that grownups are more than happy to go along with the ad... moreventure, even when it involves trying to MURDER a couple of children. The more I think on this after reading it, the more difficult it is to *really* get into this as an adult.Kids, however, would really like this, especially prolific readers looking for a series to sink their teeth into! I will not rate this, as I cannot rate it accurately as one of the target audience of this book. I can only rate it as an adult, and that wouldn't be fair to the overall rating!
review 2: The first book in the first series of 'The 39 Clues' starts off with an older woman, Grace Cahill, who is minutes away from dying of cancer. She is informing her lawyer and loyal companion, William McIntyre, that she wishes to change her will to an alternate version, that which could lead to either peril or greatness for the family members included. Amy and Dan, two orphan siblings and Grace's grandchildren, attend the funeral of their grandmother, heartbroken, but curious as to what will be left to them from her will. To everyone's surprise, it is announced by Mr. McIntyre that only those out of the approximate 400 guests to receive a program with an invitation with a gold-leafed border would be eligible to receive inheritance. Those who received the invitation amble in a room away from the others, where they are informed that they can choose a $1 million voucher as their inheritance, or participate in scavenger hunt of clues which could make them the most powerful people in the world. Though discouraged my multiple family members, Amy and Dan agree to the challenge and set on an adventure that could lead them to possible riches and power, or the alternate: death. With nothing to lose, Amy and Dan quickly take off to find the first clue, eventually coming to a conclusion that not only are they related to Benjamin Franklin, but that he has hidden the first clue in a location in Paris. Though they find the clue, a vial of thick green liquid with a strange inscription, the vial is quickly stolen from another group, the evil 'Cobras'. Luckily Dan had taken the inscription and put it in his pocket for safe keeping, as this ended up being the clue to the second clue. With that, they take off to Vienna, Austria, for the next step in the search. This a very suspenseful book which is perfect for children. Enough tension to keep the reader interested in whether or not Amy and Dan will make it to the next clue, and compelling enough to interest the reader in engaging in the next edition of the series. The story also tends to focus on famous historical people, which combined with the suspenseful storyline makes it an interesting history lesson for children who read it. less
