review 1: An amazing read, couldn't put the book down.I was pretty skeptical about what this book would be like before I started reading it as I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised.Such a fun read, I love the characters especially Knife who is a daring courageous character.A magical yet romantic tale of a brave fairy who dares to be different and follows her instincts and heart which leads her into all kinds of problems, dangers and excitement.A must read!
review 2: Hard times have fallen on the faeries of the Oak. Magic-less, and afflicted by a strange disease, they are at the mercy of the larger world, so instead they chose to hide from it. This confinement gnaws at Bryony, the most recent child to be born in a society that is dieing out. However,
... more things begin to change when Bryony gets appointed Hunter. Her new-found freedom is only bolstered by her bravery, curiosity, and defiance. There are consequences though, when she finds herself in an unexpected situation involving the human Paul. Bryony must come to terms with all she learns from him if she hopes to save her kind. Through their conversations, we see how different faeries are from humans. These are not the pretty, sparkly types that are prevalent in popular culture today. These are a more wild, natural type. All of them are female too. Their culture is based around the natural world, so it is appropriate that they are named after it, and that the author gives a fair amount of description of it. The narrative rushes forward head first, rarely stopping to smell the roses, or explore beyond the main plot.Knife's tale is just the first in this series of a struggling race of faeries. Children may prefer the happier type these days, but older girls should be able to appreciate the richer narrative these ones provide. less
