review 1: I was really torn between one and two stars. This book suffered from the tyranny of high hopes, when the reality fails to meet those high hopes invariably you feel worse about it than if you had no expectations to begin with. Everything Brent Weeks has recommended I've tried has been very engaging until this. It was well put together from a technical writing standpoint. But I never really liked the main character. In my mind she is Mindy Kaling from the Office but now in a fantasy novel with a fantasy background. There are two significant supporting characters. I liked one (Sigrud) and pitied the second (V). If Sigrud is the main character of a book two I might be willing to read it. Not sure if there will be a book two as almost all the plot threads were tied up at the en... mored of this book.
review 2: After seeing all the positive reviews on this book, maybe my expectations were raised too high. I kept expecting a moment when the book would transition from good to amazing, but before I knew it the end of the book had come and this moment never arrived. However, I did enjoy the thorough development of the gods and the culture of the Continent, and despite having many characters, I thought that each one was well developed and seemed like a real person. For these aspects alone, I gave the book 4 instead of 3 stars. less
