review 1: Set during the Great Depression, MR. SHIVERS by Robert Jackson Bennett tells the story of a man obsessed with tracking and killing a mysterious man who brutally murdered a member of his family. Along the way, he finds others just like him, and they travel through the dust bowl, hopping trains and scavenging meals, in a never-ending quest to find the man who destroyed their lives. But the road of vengeance often leads through–and often to–Hell. Bennett’s debut novel starts off strong, and while it loses steam in the middle, by the last act it really picks up and delivers a satisfying finish.
review 2: A mans daughter is killed and so he heads out on the vengeance trail. Set against the bleak backdrop of the American depression, with the preferred method of
... more travel being train jumping with the other hobos, the author paints a very bleak picture that fits well with the paranormal backdrop. The story of the mans daughter is just used as a background for the driving force of the mans vengeance. I really liked the way the author wrapped this one up. Some books can seem forced or just finish on the light side. In this book the ending seems to be well planned and fits the story very well. Good stuff for someone looking for a bit of a dark supernatural novel. less

It's been awhile since I've read a worse book. Tired mythology and misspellings make for a bad read.

Fantastically dark. Horror on the level of Stephen King but with actually good writing style.

Good book, but very dark. Time to move on to something with a brighter tone.

Steven King meets Steinbeck. I couldn't put it down.
