review 1: Reprints Invincible #71-78. Mark, his father, and his brother set out to have the last stand against the Viltrumites and not everyone may return to Earth. This book of Invincible is bloodier than normal (which says a lot about it since Invincible is usually pretty bloody). It is good, but there is also a slight problem with that. It seems like both Mark and his father can be beaten to a pulp everytime and just heal. That kind of takes the danger out of it for the main characters if there isn't much of a threat of death. Fortunately, the war is pretty good and the solution to the problem is a typical Invincible result (not taking the easy comic book route).
review 2: Unlike the grab bags of previous trades, this one (covering #71-78) focuses on the long-an
... moreticipated war against Viltrum -- a war which nearly goes off the rails from the very beginning, and degenerates quickly into a bloody brawl across multiple plants -- a war which ends in the most unexpected way, a blur of victory and defeat and Cold War that I certainly didn't see coming.Ryan Ottley's art remains clean and clear, despite the fountains of blood and mountains of intestines that the war generates. Kirkman's writing reflects the fun he has with this series -- there are enough moments of tension and drama, certainly, for the matter, but they are interspersed with enough lighter elements, jokes, even laughter, to feel more real in some ways than his more acclaimed "Walking Dead" series. The collection is not without flaws -- we end up with a lot more supporting cast (especially in the first few issues) than Invincible himself. That's not a surprise, given the plot twists, and it does set up a greater tension for later on, but Kirkman still doesn't have enough room to flesh out all the additional players in the way he wanted (per the notes in the end of the collection), particularly the Viltrumites, who come across far too much as simple mad villains for comfort. But it's overall good stuff, on a good series. Can't believe this series is up to 70+ issues and STILL going strong!

Very satisfying conclusion to many long-running plot threads.
