review 1: The problem with comic books--and young adult post-apocalyptic novels that expand over multiple books, for that matter--is that you know your protagonist will never, ever die. I seem to recall some stunt in the 90s where Superman died. But guess what...there's still a Superman. And I assume he still comes from a planet far away and he turns into a quivering mass of wimp when he encounters kryptonite and he works at a paper in his spare time as part of his secret identity. I could be wrong about all of this. I've never read a Superman comic in my life. And I can't recall any of the movies after the first two from the seventies or whenever because after that they all sucked (including the new versions). I'm pretty sure that as long as The Walking Dead exists there will... more always be a Rick Grimes, too. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Kirkman will go all George R.R. Martin and start killing off the heroes just for fun. Maybe he already has and I just haven't read that far. But at this time, I suspect we're not only stuck with Rick, but we'll also be stuck with Stupid, Boring Carl for the long run. Hell, Carl will probably outlive everyone and become the new leader. Having said all of that, it is at least nice time some times to see everyone the protagonists take a giant ass whooping from a superior foe. Sure, you know they'll probably rebound in the end. But in the meantime, why not kill off a few characters who major characters or take someone's eye or hand or whatever.I don't know if this book really breaks the formula of what The Walking Dead. The gang has been roughed up before. But this particular butt kicking comes with a new kind of brutality. Plus, there's no wolf-in-sheep's-clothing here. It's a bad guy relishing the role of playing bad in a pretty sick and twisted way that is kind of awesome and horrifying and still kind of made me laugh out loud because it was so over-the-top and absurd. And the ending--again, not the first time there's been a little slight of hand--but it does leave on nice cliffhanger. After a few volumes of treading water, this one picks up speed again.
review 2: Rick and the rest of the team who went up to Hilltop Colony prepare to return to the SafeZone to share what they have found. The visit really shook up everyone as it starts to highlight how difficult things are starting to get, particularly since their supplies are running short. If they are lucky, they probably have about six months left of food ... even with their continuing to forage the nearby buildings. It is challenges like this and the news about Negan that gets a lot of people thinking. As a result, Glenn decides that it might be a good idea to leave the Safe Zone with Sophia and go to live in Hilltop Colony. The Safe Zone itself is happy to see the return of their people, and RIck arranges for a meeting that allows everyone to find out what happened. It was pretty shocking and highlighted how they not only needed to worry about food, but also things like bullets so they can defend themselves against Negan.Abraham and Eugene, who came into the fold together, take a walk to discuss possible ways to deal with the problems of Negan. Eugene had been assigned to try to resolve the problem of ammo. Unfortunately, while they are speaking about how things with Rosita allowed them all to lose their close bonds, it was time for them to all move on. It is then, that Negan attacks, and one of the men doesn't survive the initial barrage of fire.It quickly becomes clear that Negan and his men have found them and another trip out is arranged. One of the sad things is that this trip will include the loss of Maggie, Glenn, and Sophia from their community as they are moving to Hilltop Colony. The trip turns out to take a lot longer than planned, which is probably due to the fact that they don't have Jesus with them to guide them. Things take a terrible turn when they have their first direct confrontation with Negan's men, and readers are confronted with what might be the hardest primary character death of the series to date. Negan and his men let them go so they will likely allow the Safe Zone to become another community paying them with supplies. Rick and the others quickly race the rest of the way to Hilltop Colony. Jesus and the other residents try to console the survivors and arrange for their return back to the Safe Zone, but it will never be the same. This series just keeps getting better and better. There is no question in my mind why it was turned into a series since it keeps staying so dynamic and interesting. It continues to evolve and stay interesting. On to the next one! less
