review 1: My friend Pete Vachon and I finished Book III of the Dark Tower series. It tells the story of Roland The Gunslinger as he continues his journey with his traveling companions Eddie Dean and Odetta. Eddie has given up herion and Odetta’s two selves have joined and become Susannah Dean during a wild encounter with a demon. As they continue on their path they meet up again with Jake from New York who died in another world, track down a 70 foot high bio-mechanical bear called Shardik, visit to a dying suburban village, and take a fantastic-nail-biting trip on a suicidal mono-rail train called Blaine the Pain. Each encounter provides a little more insight into Roland's fantastical world both past and present. By the end of this book you begin to understand “KA” the force t... morehat works against one’s destiny. The book is very action oriented and your left in a cliff-hanger ending.
review 2: Roland and his mates are back from their manic chase in the last book and are resting up in their home of Gilead. Roland's going through some kind of heroin-like phase with the orb where he behaves like the addict throughout, while not much else happens. His mum comes back to steal the orb from her son, his dad throws a party (I say party, it's mostly some lame step dancing you'd see in any period-type costume drama, followed by some card tricks, and parlour games - what?!?!), and we see the Crimson King once. Roland finds himself betrothed to a pretty girl but because he's still in love with his dead ex-girlfriend he can't bring himself to do anything about it. Alain finds a girl too but she's a gunslinger which isn't allowed 'cos she's a girl ooo, yawn. Typically the girl gunslinger is a maverick but is held back by her sex, humiliating the boys - in one scene Alain literally as his trousers around his ankles while she looks on superiorly, before shooting all the targets. Basically any momentum "The Long Road Home" had evaporates in this stalled third book. Some lovely artwork as usual from Jae Lee but nothing much happens here and it's just a dull read. What's going to happen in the next book, Roland gets a haircut? Alain gathers up the courage to ask out a girl he likes? Will his dad take up checkers? Come on guys, this is The Dark Tower, start writing material as badass as it should be. Take off the damn slippers and holster up the gunbelt! less

Not nearly as good as the first two installments- I kept finding my interest fading out.

Another solid volume, though this one matches a good story with a *great* ending.
