review 1: I listened to the audiobook of The Book of Blood and Shadow. While this is pitched as a fast-paced thriller I found it to be quite slow and dragging in parts. Nora along with her friends Chris, Max and Adriana are working for a professor on translating letters from the 16th century written by Elizabeth Weston to her brother Thomas. When one of Nora's friends ends up murdered the adventures begin, deceit, traveling across countries, secret societies and religious fanatics are centered around what Nora has uncovered even though she's not sure exactly what it is. Too much religion in this, I like my fiction religion-free. Also I think I just didn't care strongly about any of the characters so I could care less about their outcome which made me disinterested from the s... moretory.
review 2: The comparisons to Dan Brown's Robert Langdon books - with teens in place of Langdon - are spot-on. The book felt lengthy at times, sometimes too much of a stretch. And the "aha!" moments come pretty easily; the puzzles are solved too quickly. Very few surprises in this one; just had to wait to see how it all unfolded. Maybe closer to 3.5 stars for me. It has its faults, but in general the mystery kept me reading. less
