review 1: Well. I hardly know how to review this book. It's a YA horror story (not really dystopia, but - hopefully - not really current times either) but I'm not sure I'd actually recommend it to easily impressionable or sensitive middle-schoolers (or even squeamish not-so-YA-anymore adults). There's a lot of violence and action and suspense and WTF moments that make the pages fly by - but - every once in a while, you need to stop and reread a paragraph and THINK "what would I do in this situation?" So, my recommendation? Yes, but only if you'd appreciate a mashup-crazed-author cross of Stephen King and George R.R. Martin, then you'd like this book. Just don't get too attached to any of the characters ;)
review 2: YA seems to be one of the few genres left to really pu
... moreblish stories that push the boundaries. This is a relentlessly dark view of growing up in abusive/destroyed homes in a town with no pity due to extranatural causes. The prose is excellent. It is so much more of a horror novel than anything else. Like most of Wasserman's excellent novels, I believe it is only published as a YA novel because the main characters are adolescents. Her Skinned trilogy had the same effect or being truly brilliant dystopian science fiction but published as YA because it had adolescent protagonists, and I would recommend it over this novel. less

The set-up was SO GOOD, but then the book slowed so significantly that it was hard to keep excited.

Stephen King would be proud.
