review 1: This graphic novel wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and I think that was a deliberate choice on the part of the author. The characters are never quite what you expect – they’re more surprising, occasionally more badly behaved, and consequently more real and human than you expect. Really brings to life a piece of Warsaw history and the on-going consequences of the Holocaust on everyone touched by it, both the people who lived through it and subsequent generations. A very well-told story, nicely illustrated by deceptively simple clear line drawings. A face can be depicted with two dots for eyes, two expressive strokes of eyebrows, the curve of a smile – but the emotion that comes through is amazingly clear and surprisingly complex. Surprising complexity is a perfec... moret way to describe the whole experience of this graphic novel.
review 2: A graphic novel with a grown-up feel. Modan's artwork is lovely and she tells the a somewhat sensitive subject with humour and grace. The reason why I am giving only two stars is because of the stereotypes and insta-lust. I wish Modan would've given the characters a little more backstory and sometimes they just seem too irrational for any human being; Regina is annoying for a lot of the time and is sometimes a 'stingy Jew' caricature. I'm not a fan of overly stereotypical chracters. The graphic novel is slow in some parts (the 'love' with the Polish tour guide) and moves too fast in other places, for example, we are told hardly anything about Reuben and Regina's wartime relationship. less
